The All Ireland Inter Regional Schools Basketball tournament took place at the Kingfisher Arena in Galway last weekend. The progress that Basketball has made in the region in recent years is epitomised in the photo which shows Ciara Tolan representing the North East, from Virginia College and East Cavan Eagles, competing against the 6’4″ Jennifer Nyagaya from the South in the ‘tip off’ of the Cup Final.

IMG_3689

This annual under 15 Schools Competition, which is organised by Basketball Ireland, caters for teams from nine different regions. The hard work of the North East players and coaches over the past few years finally paid off when this year’s team put in convincing performances to overcome the East (64:45), the North (57:25), South East (50:45) and the West (47:28) in the preliminary rounds to advance to the Final of ‘Tom Collins’ Cup.

This is the first occasion that a team from the North East has progressed to the final of this prestigious competition. The North East went into an early lead, however, the South team, who were the tournament favourites and reigning Champions were not going to be easily beaten. Despite best efforts the South secured a narrow lead which they held out to win at the final whistle by the narrowest of margins of 37 to 33.

The North East Team were – Ciara Tolan (Virginia College), Sarah Dilllon (Ballymahon Mercy), Aisling Ni Ghallchoir, Caoimhe Nic an Bhaird, and Lara O’Martin (Colaiste Oiriall), Alex Mulligan (St Louis), Erin Hamill, Grainne Tibby and Jennifer Duffy (Capt) (Our Lady’s Castleblaney), Fiona Cahalin and Jane Larkin (Dunshaughlin Community College), Lauren Malone (St Joseph’s Mercy) and Coaches Kelly McCabe and Megan Regan.
The high standard of Basketball certainly gave Irish Under 15 Coach Andy Gill plenty of food for thought as he cast a watchful eye over the emerging talent. There can be little doubt that many of the North East Team will feature on the Irish Development Squad, which will be selected in the next few weeks as they begin the two year training program in preparation for the European Championships in 2017.

Important Notice from Basketball Ireland Chief Executive

Important Notice from Basketball Ireland Chief Executive

BBI_Logo_Horizontal_Rev_RGB

Basketball Ireland’s Chief Executive/Secretary General, Bernard O’Byrne has written to the North East Area Board today and asked us to relay the contents of his email to all in the region.

I confirm that four clubs from the North East Area are not registered with Basketball Ireland and therefore players, coaches and officials from those clubs cannot partake in any Basketball Ireland activities. Additionally any referee who partakes in any activities involving those clubs will stand suspended within Basketball Ireland.

The clubs are Navan Cougars, Liby Dynamites, Cavan Lakers and Streete Warriors.

As previously notified any players from those clubs who play in schools competition risk being suspended themselves and also having their schools teams suspended.

I hope this clarifies matters.
